FREDERIC TAUBES (1900-1981)

Untitled Nudes

Ink on heavy, creamy white textured paper

Paper size: 20 x 15 inches

Image size 14 x 7 inches

Signed: Taubes (lower right)

Note: The high quality textured paper is even-toned creamy white unlike the photos. There are two small areas of adhesive on the upper margin (on the very edge) where hinges once were when the drawing was matted. Also, a bit of puckering in upper left corner that will be corrected with proper matting.

 Frederic Taubes

Frederic Taubes was born in 1900 in Lwow, Poland but moved with his family to Austria when World War I began. He studied art at the Imperial Museum and Academy of Art in Vienna. After the War, he studied one year at the Academy in Munich and in 1920 with Johannes Itten at the Bauhaus.

In the 1920s, he was influenced by Paul Cézanne, Giorgio de Chirico, Otto Dix and George Grosz. Taubes moved to New York City in 1932 and painted the portraits of Mrs. William Randolph Hearst, Baron Von Romberg and Claire Booth Luce.

Taubes was a member of the Royal Society of Arts and wrote over 40 books on art history, art criticism and art instruction. From 1942-1962, he wrote a monthly column “The Taubes Page,” for American Artist Magazine. He was also a contributing editor for the Encyclopedia Britannica.

Taubes taught and lectured from 1937 through to the 1970s at major universities worldwide. His name is on a line of artist canvas and art supplies that are still available today.
